The birth of the 'Heart Beat' Collection

May 28, 2015

In July 2014, I was invited by Harefield Hospital to hold a solo exhibition in their Hungry Hare Dining Room. I always endeavour to find out about my audience to select the right pieces to hang or to create new ones. Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust is the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe. Many of the patients and their relatives spend significant time within the hospital environment. For many, they see the miracle of coming back to normality thanks to the amazing works of the heart. And this is how the 'Heart Beat' glass collection was born. I wanted my glass art to contribute to this very special experience for all those patients, relatives and staff. I started breaking pieces of glass from different sources and went through a creative process of mounting layers during several kiln firings until I felt that the piece was conveying the complexity and marvel of the Heart Beat. I have now created a whole series of hearts either using float glass, recycled glass, Bullseye glass or metal inclusions. Each piece is unique.
